Oiling 'Round

During the calm between depression and war in the American heartland, train time was still the best show in a small town, as here in Ohio on the New York Central (Big Four to locals) as boys focus on a hero from afar as he oils the Baker gear of his J-1d Hudson. Soon an 80mph stide will erase the conductor's impatience.

Hand Off at Harrisburg

A GGI has brought Pennsylvania Railroad's Broadway Limited in from New York, but catenary expires here in Harrisburg, PA., and steam will relay the extra-fare, all-Pullman limited for the balance of its 907-mile overnight journey to Chicago. Only 5 minutes are allowed for the change of power, so double headed K4 Pacifics ease back promptly to lock couplers with the Railway Post Office on the headend of No. 29.
